Study of pion-nucleon scattering up to 1.9 GeV through a coupled- channels meson-nucleon model
II, 126 S., 2003
In the present work we study the πN induced reactions in a coupled-channels
approach in the range of c.m. energies from the πN threshold up to 1.9 GeV.
A meson-exchange model, which includes the channels πN , ηN, as well as three
effective ππN channels namely pN, πΔ, and σN is constructed. Within this
framework we systematically investigate the background ( non resonant)
contributions in the elastic πN scattering for all partial waves with J ≤ 3/2 and
achieve a good agreement with the data at small energies having only a few free
parameters. This background also proves to be consistent with the data at higher
energies, and this agreement allowed us to include a number of the N* and Δ
resonances, and to describe the πN data in the whole energy range considered.
Simultaneously, a reasonable agreement with the data is obtained for the total
πN → pN and total and differential πN → ηN transition cross sections. The
importance of higher partial waves for those reactions is emphasized. The
connection of the πN dynamics in the Sll partial wave to the reaction πN → ηN is
discussed.
