A program suite for the analysis of Duffings equation
223 S., 1998

In a series of two publications, we have presented new ideas and methods to better understand and handle dissipative, forced nonlinear oscillators (Duffing type systems) analytically [1] and numerically [2] for a certain parameter regime (a more detailed account was also given in [3] in German). In the course of this research a suite of programs for manipulation of formulae and numerical implementation and execution of these have been developed, which have been used for our publications.

Our results can be applied or reproduced only if programs are available which perform the corresponding tasks. Although we made considerable effort in our publications to give the full information necessary for others to reproduce our work, it is hardly to be expected that someone would undergo the time consuming and unnecessary task to reconstruct these programs.

In experimental science it is standard to publish instrumental details in journals of scientific instrumentation. We feel, that in the overlapping region of numerical and mathematical physics an analogous tradition should evolve. This report and the availability of our programs on a server http://www.fz juelich.de/iff/theoryl/duffing/index.html is a step in this direction. We invite colleague to use, modify and apply our programs under the terms of the Gnu Public License (see section "License Agreement" on page 216). For full publication in a scientific journal the material is obviously too voluminous. Moreover, not all of these programs were originally conceived for use by others; some of them are poorly commented. Thus, we choose to make this material available in the form of an internal report, which can be ordered from the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH.
