To characterize the sub-µm thin CGO films a model system consisting of
substrate (sapphire or alloys) / CGO electrolyte / electrode (platinum or gold) was used.
Homogeneously doped layers could be prepared using HF-magnetron-sputtering and
reactive co-evaporation. The structure of the layers was varied by the preparation
temperatures leading to epitactical and nearly single crystalline (based on sapphire) ,
homogeneously dense (based on alloy) or columnar structures.
The conductivity was characterized by impedance spectroscopy showing
different values while measuring parallel or perpendicular to the direction of film growth
due to the anisotropic geometrical structure of the films. Parallel to the direction
of film growth the conductivity was dominated by the conductivity of the grain
interior (bulk) while the contribution of the grain boundaries could be neglected.
Perpendicular to the direction of film growth only the grain boundary conductivity
could be observed. The specific conductivity of the homogeneously dense films was
higher than that of the columnar ones. However, the former ones proved to be
thermally instable transforming into a columnar structure accompanied by a reduction
of the specific conductivity. In literature the values for the specific conductivities
show to have a wide range which can be associated with the different structures
analyzed in this work.

Struktur und Leitfähigkeit dünner Cer-Gadolinium-Schichten
IV, 135 S., 2002
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) with the electrolyte Yttria stabilized Zirkonia
(YSZ) are already used in prototype powerplants. Due to the high operating
temperatures of 800 - 1000 °C, required for the operation of the electrolyte,
enormous stress is put on the peripheral equipment. Therefore, Gadolinia doped Ceria
(Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9, CGO) is discussed as an alternative Oxygen ion conductor
exhibiting an higher specific conductivity in the temperature range of 300 - 800 °C.
Employing thin films as an electrolyte could be a further improvement in
reducing the ohmic resistance of the electrolyte. Therefore sub-µm thin CGO films were
prepared and analyzed in this work.
