ne=l x 1018-1.5 x 1019 m-3, Te=30-100 eV eingesetzt.
For the design of a future fusion reactor, the exact knowledge of the interaction between the
hot plasma and the plasma-facing components such as limiters and divertor target plates is of
great importance. Fusion plasmas consist of hydrogen isotopes, hence the interaction of these
species with the wall materials is of special interest. Graphite has been examined as a wall
material because of its suitability regarding the required heat load characteristics. With regard
to graphite, the storage ability of hydrogen as well as the physical processes which contribute
to the hydrogen release and to the influence of the boundary plasma are crucial.
The purpose of this work is a global characterisation of the neutral species which are set free
from a graphite surface during the hydrogen recycling process. The emphasis was put on the
isotope deuterium. Besides the question of the type of the surface-released species - atomic or
molecular - and their characteristics - velocity distribution, penetration depth, population etc.
-, the investigations were focused on the determination ofthe entire deuterium particle flux.
For the first time, a quantification was carried out via the simultaneous absolute determination
of the particle fluxes of the atoms and molecules involved. In order to probe deuterium, a
special measurement arrangement was used, which enabled the simultaneous observation by
means of five spectroscopic systems. Additionally, another active system was attached to the
measuring arrangement in order to determine the local velocity distribution and density of the
atoms in the ground state by means of LIF at Lα.
All diagnostics were used in situ in front of a limiter in the plasma edge of TEXTOR over the
entire accessible parameter range ne=l x 1018-1.5 x 1019 m-3, Te=30-100 eV.
The complete photon flux of the molecular Fulcher-band was determined and converted
through the experimentally validated conversion factors D/XB from a collision radiative
model into an absolute molecular flux of the recycled deuterium. Prerequisites for the
determination were both preliminary investigations of extemally injected gas and the
complete entry of vibrational and rotational population in the upper Fulcher state as a function
of plasma and surface parameters. By means of an experimentally found coupling between the
vibrational and rotational population of the Fulcher-band, a simplified procedure for the
determination of the molecular particle flux could be developed. This procedure reduces the
number of necessarily observed molecular bands - from six to one - and thus also the total
number of required plasma discharges. This simplified method found further application in
other fusion plasmas such as in JET and Tore Supra.
The atomic particle flux was examined by means of the Balmer-α transition. The entire
deuterium particle flux set free and the ratio of atoms to molecules could be determined by the
variation of the surface temperature. The release of deuterium from a graphite surface in a
high temperature plasma takes place via thermal molecules. The molecules contribute 90% to
the total deuteron flux in the case oflow surface temperatures. The remaining 10% of the total
flux result from the contribution of mainly reflected particles. In contrast, the release took
place via thermal atoms only, in the case of a heated surface.
With knowledge of the ratio of atoms to molecules, a correction for the factor S/XB could be
determined. It permitted the determination of the total deuterium particle flux from the
measurement ofthe Balmer-α photon flux with consideration of the molecules.
Both with passive and active spectroscopy the presence of so-called cold or low-energy atoms
(< 1 eV) was confirmed. It is assumed that they have their origin in the high number of
molecules and molecular ions in the boundary layer. In order to clarify the reaction
mechanism, further measurements with LIF and modelling with the neutral particle code
EIRENE will be necessary .
