This doctoral dissertation is based on the general concept of a thermal subcritical system
using liquid lead as the carrier of the actinides as weIl as coolant. Through the introduction of
a continuous charging with fuel as weIl as a continuous extraction of the specific fission
products a fuel composition with an extremely low concentration of actinides in the liquid
lead could be achieved. By this, the subcritical system can be maintained at an almost
constant and high multiplication factor throughout the operation time. Compared to other
unsolved problems concerning the concept of the system the optimised Jülicher Acceleration
Driven System shows a far better performance than other transmutation concepts.
For the system hereunder a general concept has been designed also striking a balance on
toxicity .It has been shown that a one through operation mode of the highly radioactive
actinides in the transmutation system can not reduce the toxicity significantly. The
intermediate storage and repeated implementation of curium appears to be the adequate
approach to eventually destroy the employed actinides. Simultaneously, it could be shown
that a significant reduction of the toxic potential is a priori only possible through the
utilisation of plutonium and minor actinide as fuel. Otherwise the disposal of the reprocessing
waste determines the toxicity .
Provided the operating losses of the transmutation plant can be brought below 0.1 % and the
separation ratio of the minor actinides of currently 99.9 % can be improved, a transmutation
and reduction of the toxicity of the radioactive actinides to the level of freshly enriched
uranium after 1,000 years seems weIl possible with this kind of subcritical thermal system
developed and described hereunder.

Actinidenumwandlung in thermischen unterkritischen Systemen
XII, 156 S., 2001
The nuclear energy plays an important role in the power production of industria1ised
economies. A plausible environmental compatibility will, however, be a prerequisite for a
further intensive use of the nuclear energy.
One approach for a plausible environmental compatibility in terms of the disposal is based on
a necessary exclosure time for the radioactive waste from the biosphere in the order of 1,000
years. In fact, a technical barrier seems possible for this time scale.
Such demand can only be met by a drastic reduction ofthe toxic potential ofthe actinides and
transuranium elements, respectively. In order to accomplish such reduction a separation
(partitioning) and nuclear transformation (transmutation) is necessary.
